Fun thing about professional regulations in Canada, at least outside of Alberta: I can’t call myself an Analytics Engineer or an aspiring Data Engineer, though that’s what I would be described as in other jurisdictions due to my technical focus on wiring up analytics solutions.
This is because the use of the label “Engineer” requires you to have an actual engineering degree and certification in Canada. It’s actually not only technically illegal to call yourself one, but also to post jobs looking for engineers in Canada if the job doesn’t require an engineering degree. The only exception is in Alberta, where they’ve made exceptions for data, software, and computer “engineers”.
Interestingly, here in Canada, engineers usually also have a special iron ring that they get upon graduating in a ceremony called “The Ritual of the Calling of an Engineer”.
For similar reasons I also can’t call myself an Analytics Architect or Data Architect.
So I’ve settled on “Analytics Implementation Specialist”, hoping for the best!
